Dave Veres attempted a comeback in the Atlantic League in 2008. A former major league closer, he had recovered from hip-replacement surgery and still threw a good split-finger fastball/forkball. The Revs manager at the time, Chris Hoiles, marveled at the fact Veres — who was not quite two years younger than Hoiles — was attempting a comeback after undergoing the same procedure Hoiles also endured a few years after his retirement from baseball.
Veres comeback didn’t work out, he left the Revs in August after closing the final game he pitched in. A teammate and friend of Darryl Kile, Veres responded to a blogger’s request to write about his friend on the 10-year anniversary of his unexpected passing.
One of the better interview subjects that has played in York, Veres does an incredible job of providing a glimpse of who Kile was as a person.
